How to Share Your Love of Halloween (Without Hosting a Party)

There’s something wild and free about trick-or-treating.

Being set loose on in the neighborhood dressed up in a disguise to collect candy is one of the most liberating feelings a kid can have. It’s a feeling many of us try to recapture as adults with our Halloween celebrations.

Of course, Halloween parties full of killer costumes, delicious treats, and creepy cocktails are one of the easiest ways to celebrate, but parties aren’t always practical – or affordable.

So what’s a ghoul or goblin to do? Share your love of Halloween another way! I’m often asked for ideas for sharing the love of Halloween with others that don’t involve parties…and I hear you! I hope you find something to enjoy on this list.

How to Share Your Love of Halloween (Without Hosting a Party)

Send Halloween cards

Who says holiday cards are only for the December holidays? Break the tradition and send all your friends and family Halloween cards this year! Make your own, buy from a small business on sites like Etsy, or drop by a dollar store to grab several for a fraction of the cost. U.S. friends – don’t forget to look for Halloween stamps from the USPS.

Send a scare package

If you already send cards or are looking for a new idea, why not exchange Halloween scare packages with your spooky BFF? Fill the box with small toys, their favorite candy, a horror movie, or even a Halloween T-shirt! Get more ideas for a scare package.

Carve jack-o-lanterns throughout October

The only rule we follow about jack-o-lanterns is you never blow out the candle. (IYKYK…) But who says you have to wait for Halloween night – or heck, even October! – to carve one up? Try carving jack-o-lanterns on a regular basis this Halloween season. It’s a great way to try new faces or designs.

Make a treat using your favorite Halloween candy

Sure, it’s fun to buy a bag of your favorite Halloween candy…but why not take it to the next level and create a new dessert using that candy? Chop up chocolate bars for cookies or brownies. Top a cupcake with your sour gummies or steep some fruit candies in a liquor like vodka to concoct a new spooky cocktail at home! Find ideas at bit.ly/halloweencandyrecipes.

Host a movie night…for you

And much like that jack-o-lantern rule, who says you have to have people over for a party? Host a party for one (or for members of your household) by planning a movie night. Make a themed snack or grab your favorite Halloween treats at the grocery store. Then curl up under a Halloween blanket, turn off all the lights (and your phone!), and enjoy an evening of spooky goodness.

Wear Halloween clothing every day in October

Sometimes the easiest way to share your love of October 31st is by wearing it! My friend Penny, who writes over at thesconniesling.com, has done a beautiful job of sharing daily Halloween outfits in October. Take her idea and run with it, whether it’s an entire outfit, your favorite horror tees, or just a simple Halloween accessory you add to your look.

Take a pumpkin walk

This was an idea that popped up during Halloween 2020, and I think it’s a great one to keep using! As it gets closer to Halloween, grab a family member or friend and go for a walk in your neighborhood. Count how many pumpkins (or inflatables or skeletons or whatever you want!) you find as you wander.
